The humble receive mercy

Homily starts at 21:24.

Self-sufficiency: I'm going alone, I can do this on my own.

We have a tendency to be self-sufficient because of disappointment, feeling like a burden.

We sometimes are self-sufficient even with God, we question why God causes us suffering and want to do it on our own.

The opposite of self-sufficiency is humility.

The pharisee does not pray in a way that he needs God. The tax collector is humbling himself; admitting to his sin.

The humble receive mercy.

How to cultivate humility:

  1. Look up to others: let's see others with regard and dignity.
  2. Say the Jesus prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me, a sinner"
    • Acknowledge the truth who God is: He is Lord, and I am not.
