We can spend a lot of time talking at God, but do we listen? Listening begins when we stop talking. We need to approach the Lord in prayer and say “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). We may not hear anything at first; but, if we listen enough we can trust that God will get through to us. Have we underestimated God in our lives? Take a quick look at the scriptures and you will note there is no shortage of God speaking to his people. You are one of His people and God still speaks today.

Does the active voice of God fit in with your current experience? Or is God rather quiet and remote? Does it seem like God has retired or that He has nothing else to do or say? I believe that God wants to speak and accomplish far more than He is currently allowed. This is not to say that God is limited or restricted, but rather that He has chosen to wait for our permission. The reason why God’s will isn’t always accomplished in our lives and in our parishes is simply because we don’t let Him. We need to let God be God and give Him permission.

Maybe you have given God permission in the past, or maybe this is something you never heard of. Either way, may you give God permission to do whatever He wants in your life, in your family, in your church, and in your country. We shouldn’t be content with being a satisfactory christian. The Lord is just scratching the surface in our lives. May we listen and give God permission for “the eyes of the Lord roam over the whole earth, to encourage those who are devoted to him wholeheartedly…” (2 Chronicles 16:9)
