When I eat out, where do I go? Will Bert's Beanery do, or does it always have to be the El Trocadero? Must I have so many clothes, or always buy such high quality? What kind of car do I drive? How dedicated am I to gadgetry? Must I have the latest energy-saving device? Am I into exotic holidays?
I think the Lord would have us hear closely the words of Jesus to Martha:
"You are concerned about too many things. Only one is necessary." (Luke 10:41-42)
What is the one thing Jesus wants us to get concerned about? Following him—that's what he wants.
We don't want to be like the seed that fell upon the footpath. "It was choked by life's worries, riches, and pleasures. It did not take root." (Luke 8:14)
I think the Lord wants us to know that the more we have, the more we will have to worry about.
