“There are many biblical references to wisdom. The one I have found most arresting is Proverbs 4:7. The inspired writer says: ‘The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom! At the cost of all you have, get understanding.’ The effect of that line has been, not only to convict me that wisdom is important, but to set me upon a quest to discover its full implications.
“The letter of St. James is reassuring. The author advises us: ‘If you want wisdom, ask for it.’ (James 1:4) It would appear then, that, whatever wisdom is, the Lord is willing to give it to us.
“The text that begins, however, to uncover for me the full meaning of wisdom is from St. Paul's letter to the Colossians. He says: ‘I have been praying for you that you might have full knowledge of God's will through perfect wisdom and spiritual insight.’ (Colossians 1:9)”
