Is the Church Evangelizing?

Bishop Christian Riesbeck PreachingIn 1975, Pope Paul VI wrote an encyclical On Evangelization in the Modern World. In it he said that evangelization is “the essential mission of the Church," that evangelizing “is the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity... She exists in order to evangelize.” (Pope Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi, 14)

Do we realize that? Is the Church doing what it exists to do? Is it evangelizing? [Tweet this]

From the beginning of his pontificate John Paul II had talked about the New Evangelization. He immediately saw the need for the New Evangelization in the Church and he immediately started talking about the New Evangelization. In 1990, Pope John Paul II renewed the call: “The moment has come to commit all of the Church's energies to a new evangelization and to the mission ad gentes [to the nations]. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples.” (John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio, 1990, 3)
