“Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, “Brothers what should we do?” Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added..” Acts 2:37-38, 41
The Catholic Church today is active in an astounding number of good works. Still, we appeal to you today with a certain sense of urgency. In 1971, only 4% of Canadians said they had no religious affiliation. Today that number is approaching 25%! In addition, 47% of Canadians identified themselves as Catholic in 1971. Today that number has dropped to 39%.
Each of us has experienced the heartache of seeing someone we know and love drift away from the Church. Today, more than ever, our Church needs leaders who have a heart for the New Evangelization.
We need leaders who have the ability to inspire all the baptized to be fully alive in their faith. Moreover, our priests must equip the lay faithful to be missionary disciples. So that each of us can become agents in the renewal of the Church and society.
